Creative arrangements of modern Brazilian songs
Carlos from Rio | Rio de Janeiro, RJ Brazil | 08/13/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Dori Caymmi comes from an important breed in Brazilian music. He is son to Dorival Caymmi and brother to singer Nana Caymmi and Danilo Caymmi. Was I to say Dori Caymmi is the most brilliant son of old Caymmi, I would do no wrong.Dori Caymmi is a composer, singer and arranger. His most famous composition was "Like a Lover" with English lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman and recorded by Carmen McRae, Mark Murphy, Sergio Mendes, and Sarah Vaughan.Material on this album consists of his choice of contemporary Brazilian songs and composers what includes Caetano Veloso, Ivan Lins, Paulinho da Viola, and Chico Buarque among others. The title "Contemporaneos" in Portuguese means "contemporary" and refers to all composers who came to the scene in the same generation as Dori's.So the arranger brilliant side of Dori Caymmi is his most featured trace on this album along with his smart singing. Caymmi has produced a smartly curious exchange with sensational results: he's invited composer Caetano Veloso to sing Chico Buarque's "Januaria". He's also invited composer Chico Buarque to sing Caetano Veloso's "Sampa". The opening title is wonderfully sung by Caymmi. Also his sister Nana Caymmi sings Ivan Lins'"Lembra de Mim".All sung in Portuguese. Beautiful!"
