CD Reviews

Well they've been doing it to DVDs for a while. Guess it's t

"For the last little bit, DVD companies have been repackaging their old discs two, three, sometimes even four inside one DVD case and selling them as double/triple features, 4-packs, etc at a much lower price than buying each DVD separately. (Sometimes they use fipper discs, but in many cases, it's simply shoving existing discs into one package.) Now it seems like Sony BMG is doing this with CDs. While they've put existing CDs, cases and all, inside slipcases for years (And one of the configurations of these sets does just that, for the same price.), rarely have the prices been this low for a set. For now, these sets are only available for a few country singers such as Dolly, Martina McBride, and Willie Nelson, but here's hoping they branch out a little if these do well enough.

This set offers three of Dolly's albums from her time at Columbia Records. Disc 1 contains her 1991 album Eagle When She Flies. Reaching #1 on Billboard's country albums chart and #24 on the pop album chart, Eagle produced three top 40 country singles - Rockin' Years with Ricky Van Shelton (#1), Silver And Gold (#15), and the title track (#33). The album was certified Gold for shipment of 500,000 copies four months after release, with a Platinum certification for shipment of 1 million copies 13 months later.

Disc 2 contains 1993's Slow Dancing With The Moon. Slow Dancing did even better than Eagle, going Platinum eight months after release, topping the country album charts, and reaching #16 on the pop album chart. The singles from the album were less successful, with only Romeo reaching the country top 40, peaking at #27. Romeo was also her first single to reach the Billboard Hot 100, hitting #50, since her 1985 duet with Kenny Rogers, Real Love, reached #91. It would also be her last until When I Get Where I'm Going with Brad Paisely reached #39 in 2005.

The third and final disc in the set includes 1989's White Limozeen, her second album for Columbia, and the comeback album following the critical and commercial failure of her one and only pure pop album, Rainbow. White Limnozeen produced six singles, the first five of which reached the country top 40 - Why'd You Come In Here Lookin' Like That (#1), Yellow Roses (#1), He's Alive (#39), Time For Me To Fly (#39), White Limozeen (#29), and Take Me Back To The Country. The album didn't chart on the pop album charts, but it reached #3 on the country album charts and went Gold about two and a half years after its release.

I'm quite pleased with my purchase of this set, and I hope to purchase Martina McBride's triple feature set soon as well. I hope the record companies take note and release more of these. It's a great way to add to your collection without spending a lot of money."
