CD Reviews

One of the Best gospel albums ever!

"Doc Watson is an American treasure! The man has never cut a bad album! (Yes, I even loved DOCABILLY.) This one is my personal favorite, but as an independent Baptist church songleader my judgement is a bit biased. Still, this album has much to recommend it on many levels.First, it is a true FOLK album. Doc really raided the old turn-of-the-century gospel songbooks for this one, and the treatments are incredibly reverent-- a real tribute to Doc's integrety as an interpreter of folk material! Doc could have opened for D.L. Moody or Sam Jones and never raised an eyebrow! Also, it is great as an album of extremely sound, zealous and truly doctrinal Gospel songs. Those of you looking for the bombastic, worldly, Elvis style of Southern Gospel better just skip it. These songs are hardcore evangelistic treatises. Check out "Did Christ O'er Sinners Weep" (with Doc's recitation of John 3:16-17), "The Ninety and Nine," and the incredible "You Must Come In At The Door." Pure old-time soul-winners! (I don't know Doc's personal testimony, but judging from the Scripture he selected for the liner notes I am guessing he knows the Lord! )I recommend this album to all Christians, folk enthusiasts and students of the American Gospel hymn and its rich history. AMEN!"

"Truthfully, I don't know much about music, but I know what I like to hear and this album ranks as one of my all-time favorites! Check out "I'll Live On," "Beautiful Golden Somewhere," "Uncloudy Day," and "Precious Lord." I find that when I'm in poor spirits, this album will raise me up."
