First & Favorite of Dizzy Gillespie

"This was the first CD I owned of Dizzy Gillespie, and still remains one of my all-time favorites! It'd definitely be on my 10 cds to take with me to a desert island. Roy Hargrove has some very insightful comments on the 'joy' in Dizzy's music, and reflecting on that I couldn't agree more. Diz's work is upbeat and energetic throughout, and his ballads have that essence of catharsis to them that I love. Being a Jazz Trumpeter I cnanot help but be in awe of Diz all throughout and simply mark this album as one of my all-time favorites. (To the track 'Ool-Ya-Koo': Damn! I wish I could do that!)"

"Excellent introduction to various facets of Dizzy's work - be-bop, latin jazz, big bands, small groups, colaboration with Parker, Eldridge and others, playing, (jocular) singing...

Hargrove's accompanying notes are not very informative but his sellection is excellent.
