CD Reviews

SIMPLY DIVINE

"Ironically, the best album Divine ever made was released a few months after her death. That's unfortunate, because most of the material on this CD is far superior to the more well-known songs she did with producer Bobby Orlando.

With a few exceptions, most of "Bobby-O's" songs sounded exactly the alike, and they each sounded like they were written and recorded in about five minutes. Furthermore, those songs have been released and re-released on countless "Best Of" compilations over the years.

"MAID in the UK" is a collection of singles and B-sides he recorded in England with English producers after Divine parted ways with Bobby-O. It contains some of the best songs she ever recorded, including "I'm So Beautiful," "Hard Magic," and my personal favorite, "You Think You're a Man." Even the brief instumental, "Divine's Theme" is a winner.

While there are some dull moments, like "Good Time-88" and three indentical mixes of "Hey You!," this is THE Divine album to get. Even if you already have her other "Best Of" CD's, your collection is NOT complete without this one!"

"This import CD was released in 1996 on Galaxis CD9006(Germany) in conjunction with the dance music ZYX label and is now out of print. Much of Divine's music on CD is a repackaging of the same popular Divine songs produced by Bobby "O". This release contains tracks not available on CD anywhere else which makes it a great CD to own. It was billed as Divine's first official album release as mentioned on the cover flag. Some of these tracks were B-sides on 12" vinyl releases. Interestingly, one of Divine's most popular songs, "Walk Like A Man" is commonly left off most Divine CD collections, but is contained here.

The tracks are:

1. Divine's Theme 2:10

2. You Think You're A Man 6:59

3. Give It Up 2:45

4. I'm So Beautiful 7:08

5 Show Me Around 3:17

6. Walk Like A Man (Remix) 5:27

7. Twistin' The Night Away (Remix) 5:34

8. Good Time '88 3:45

9. Hard Magic (Magic Mix) 3:22

10. Little Baby (Remix) 6:15

11. Hey You! (Remix) 5:42

12. Divine Reprise 0:56

13. Hey You! (The Trumpet Mix) 5:40

Ladies and gentlemen... Divine!

"The late Divine was an actor best known for playing roles in drag in John Waters movies. He also had a recording career singing "Hi-NRG" dance music. Hi-NRG was a style of electronic dance music that was popular in Europe in the early 1980s, but never really caught on in America, other than in gay nightclubs. Divine couldn't really sing, but with this kind of music, that's almost besides the point. This particular CD features music he recorded for Proto Records. I actually prefer the earlier material he recorded for "O" Records, but there are a few decent songs on here like "You Think You're a Man" and "Walk Like a Man". Overall, though, the songs are rather repetitive
