Synopsis

Album Description
Most urban-pop music aficionados in Canada have already known for the last few years that when you need a vocalist to shut the house down, you call Divine Brown. When Brown belts out her typically tender soul music numbers, it's as clear a partnership of soul, pop and jazz as you'll hear in the clubs or on the airwaves. Her pipes must be the product of another time period, when vocal chops really mattered. With her self-titled debut, Brown makes a successful leap from slightly-below-the-radar local vocal phenomenon to full-on, ready-for-the-world soul chanteuse who after one week broke a radio record with the release of her first single, 'Old Skool Love'. 13 tracks. Universal. 2005.

CD Reviews

This is my Old Skool Love
G. Harrison | Canada | 08/09/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I am completely in love with this album. It is such a welcomed change to hear REAL soul music come from a Canadian artist. Divine Brown joins the ranks of other soulsters including Alicia Keys, Angie Stone, Musiq, Anthony Hamilton et al.

The first track and single 'Old Skool Love' takes the listener back about 30 years to a time when soul music was prevalent on the airwaves with a pleading and yearning melody. Just listen to the lyrics - "still miss that Old Skool Love/not quite the do-right love/your love was fine/but never on time"...brilliant!

Brown's rendition of Joni Mitchell's 'Help Me' is nothing short of exquisite. Other standout tracks include 'You Hooked Me All Night Long', 'Another Affair', 'Without You', 'Something Bout You' and 'Warrior'. The whole album is a treat for soul music lovers everywhere.

I hope this album picks up momentum in the United States and around the world. I don't want to be a pessimist but my fear is that this album will be underrated and underappreciated in Canada. This is too good an album to let slide through the cracks."
It's about time!

"Divine Brown is without a doubt the best new artist to come out of Canada. It's been quite awhile since we've had this kind of powerhouse R&B vocalist, and this album is a treat to listen to. Divine is not only a great singer but also plays some of the music on this album. She truly brings back the meaning of what R&B really is... not just a funky backing track, but also a great vocalist. Too many so-called R&B acts these days just don't have the vocal chops to compete with the stars of the past, but Divine sure does. Every track on this album works... she does a fine job of mixing contemporary R&B with the sounds of the past. I'm not going to single out a particular track, because I think they're all great, so give her a chance. Let us hope the rest of the world will catch on, too."

"Divine Brown's self titled debut album is one of this years best kept secrets. From the hugely popular and opening track "Old Skool Love" to the closing "Warrior" this release takes you on a very enjoyable voyage.

Divine's lyrics and vocal arrangements are a welcome change to Jessica Simpson and sister(s) overproduced pop tracks. If you are lookinf for good old R&B with a commanding voice and presence that sends chills down your spine, click order and enjoy
