CD Reviews

Not sure who this is intended for
Greg Brady | Capital City | 08/02/2005
(2 out of 5 stars)

"Usually a box set is geared at medium fans up through completist collectors who want every little song and rarity. It should also serve as a nice overview that would show a novice listener the breadth and scope of the artist in question's career. This is missing too much to do that.

What's not here?:

RARITIES: How about the Valentine's Day "gift" Dion demoed for his mom of the songs "Wonderful Girl" and "We Belong Together"? Early singles he recorded as Dion and the Timberlanes for Mohawk Records? (These were regional hits in Boston and Philadelphia.)

HIT SONGS:

There are 17 Top 100 singles from Dion that aren't included. Even if you say the ones below 40 aren't "real hits", it's still missing: "No One Knows" (#19), "Don't Pity Me" (#40), "When you Wish Upon a Star" (#30), "In the Still of the Night" (#38),"The Majestic" (#36), and "Sandy" (#21).

QUALITY LOW OR NON-CHARTING SINGLES AND ALBUM TRACKS:

Where's his great cover of "Little Star"? "Spoonful"? "I Can't Help But Wonder Where I'm Bound?", "Your Own Backyard"? "Sanctuary"? "Running Close Behind You", "New York City Song"? What about his gospel career? At the least they could feature his Dove Award winning "I Put Away my Idols". How about his last "comeback" hits "And the Night Stood Still" and "King of the New York Streets"?

BOTTOM LINE:

Too much isn't here. Skip this one and get KING OF THE NEW YORK STREETS (ASIN B00005228H) for a much better overview."
