Synopsis

Album Description
The full extent of Dinah Washington's artistry can be heard on these revealing broadcasts from Birdland, where she always played to standing-room-only crowds. Here, Dinah Washington's boisterous behavior was more akin to her hosting no-holds barred private parties as opposed to a paid-for public performance. Throughout, Dinah is accompanied by the Wynton Kelly Trio. Whatever the song, it was impossible to confuse Dinah Washington with any other singer. Her voice was high-pitched, full on, and highly emotive. Gifted with precise cut-glass diction and perfect pitch, her delivery stretched from an intimate whisper to an orgasmic scream that could cut through concrete. A formidable weapon, Dinah's voice dug deep into the listener?s emotions, leaving many an audience tear stained. 2007.

CD Reviews

Another nasty European bootleg product
T. Ono | Toronto, ON Canada | 04/15/2008
(1 out of 5 stars)

"As the owner/producer of the Baldwin Street Music label, I want to point out the fact that this CD consists of Dinah Washington's performances directly taken from my Baldwin Street Music release "Queen of the Jukebox LIVE 1948-1955" (still in print) and several songs from my friend Joe Fields' "Arnett Cobb/Dinah Washington" CD on High Note. I paid for the right to release this material and spent enormous amount to restore these previously unavailable private recordings. Joe did the same with his product. These European labels pay nobody. They just copy other labels' finidshed products. Because of this kind of thing keeps happening, I am cancelling my two follow-up releases "Dinah at Basin Street 1955-1956" and "Dinah/More Live at Birdland 1960-1962." I will enjoy the music privately with my close friends. Why should I make it available to the world just to be quickly ripped off by a bootleg label. Sorry, fans!"
