Fischer-Dieskau in his Prime
J Scott Morrison | Middlebury VT, USA | 07/21/2010
(5 out of 5 stars)

"This CD of Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau singing Brahms lieder is issued from material from German Radio (Deutschlandradio Kultur, formerly known as RIAS Berlin) from 1971 that has never been published before. It is released in honor of the great singer's 85th birthday. It contains a program (66'26") of mostly fairly rarely heard songs from Brahms's output of about two-hundred lieder. Fischer-Dieskau is accompanied brilliantly by the wonderful Hungarian virtuoso Tamás Vásáry. Sound is quite good for its time; one occasionally hears a little tape hiss, but otherwise it is excellent. The disc is, of course, self-recommending. Fischer-Dieskau was almost certainly the most-recorded art-song singer in history, not surprising given the beauty of his voice and the unfailingly skillful attention he gave to the meanings of the sung texts. Perhaps you might want to listen to several of the samples provided here by Amazon and see what you think. I found myself both charmed and gratified.

The German song texts are provided with no translations.
