CD Reviews

Wow!

(4 out of 5 stars)

"I'm not a real admirer of lieder. "Soupir" by Ravel blew me away but I have yet to find that experience again, even with the master of the lied, Schubert. I love Schubert's piano music, yet the addition of voice to this purely abstract music of his has never appealed to me. Maybe it's because I was raised on pop music, and the emotional impact of art song never seems to me as immediate as any of my favorite songs. In any event, I gave this CD a casual listen and was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Maybe I've come to a turning point in my ever-evolving music sensibilities, or maybe this is just a spectacular set of songs given an excellent treatment. Thierry Felix has a clear, expressive voice which never sounds strained or melodramatic. It is this lack of silent movie antics I think that makes this disc so appealing to me. In any event, Paul Badura-Skoda's performance on an 1825 Graf is excellent. The Arcana label has surprised me with several releases lately (such as Stany David Lasry's Debussy cycle on historic pianos) and this is a nice addition to the canon. Andreas Staier and Christophe Pregardien recorded Die Schone Mullerin for DHM several years back but that CD is no longer available. Fans of the lied, or skeptics like me: this is worth your time."
