CD Reviews

Denyce Graves is amazing!

"This cd is a collection of spirituals and hymnals. Most of the tunes are pretty familiar, but I've never heard someone perform them like Denyce Graves. She has a unique style and quality in her voice that is absolutely fabulous. Even if you've heard other opera singers do these songs (Kathleen Battle, Jessye Norman, etc.), trust me when I say that you have not really experienced this type of music. Graves' interpretation of "Give Me Jesus" gives me chills every time I hear it and honestly puts every other interpretation I've heard to shame. You will definitely be satisfied with this cd and if not, I'll be happy to take it off your hands! :)"

"Track 3. Oh, Glory. Just listen and live. Absolutely sublime. The piece transcends description. Ms. Graves, a treasure you are. Grazie, bella."

"If you are about to commit a crime, or are even thinking about committing one, put this CD on, close your eyes and sit back. It will put you right, probably save you from long years in the hoosegow.

Denyce Graves has one of the most wonderful mezzo voices in the world today. She sings negro spirituals like no white singer can do it. It must be the inate "soul." Her rendition of "Give m Jesus" worked itself into my brain, so that I could think of little else in my quiet moments for many days. Just when I feared I would go crazy I realized that, nevertheless, I would never have missed hearing it - over and over again.

If you love Marilyn Horne you will also love Denyce Graves."
