CD Reviews

Classy version of Child in Time

(4 out of 5 stars)

"After reading so many average reviews of the album I was not sure if I should pick it from the rack. As a hard core fan I did end up picking the CD and am I glad I did.As said by some of the other reviewers Gillan seems to show less interest on this album. It could be because of the tussle at the time with Blackmore. On 'Strange Kind of Woman' Gillan tries to instigate the Man In Black into the Screaming and guitar solo alternates which Blackmore seems to kill rather than build up. Gillan then cleverly converts and moves the song into 'Jesus Christ Superstar..', wonderfuly done.Though The album lacks when compared to 'Made in Japan', there is enough energy in it to sound exciting to me.The great part of the album are the rare live versions of three 'House of Blue light' songs 'Bad attitude' Dead or Alive' and 'Hard loving Woman'. The editing of the album is not great as a lot of Gillan's talk with the audience fades in and out. But the clear winner on this album is the best live version of 'Child in Time' where Gillan covers up for his lack luster performance with more edgy lamenting and screaming giving the song a new feel. There is nothing extra on the other older hits like 'Highwaystar', 'Black night' 'smoke on the water' or 'space trucking'.The icing on the cake is the live rendition of 'Hush' by Gillan."
What's with the bad rep for this one?

"It's really good. It provides live versions of three songs from "The House of Blue Light" that as far as I know have not been recorded live at any other time. "Perfect Strangers" and "Knocking at Your Back Door" both rock as well. Sure, some of the classics, such as "Highway Star" and "Strange Kind of Woman" have been done better, but as far as I'm concerned, this is the best live performance of "Smoke on the Water" ever recorded. Most of the other classics are pretty good. It's not Made in Japan, but it wasn't supposed to be either. Buy it."

"regardless of what other fans think , I think this is one of the best DP live albums ever.

The 88 version of Hush is great. You cant find the live version of Perfect strangers and Knocking at your back door with this line up in any other CD.

All classic songs are very well played and it seems like the audience responded well too.

I know the "real" DP fans are rolling over their eyes but I think this CD is up there with Made in Japan......
