Acoustic/Urban/Gospel/ Soul Music at its BEST
jay | Dallas | 07/26/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Out of all the cds I've purchased in 2003, Debra Killings, Surrender, is the best cd of 2003 so far. She's bring fresh music and innovation to the gospel genre (which has tendecies to be too cliche and repetitive by singing "I Made It" and repeating it 100 times). One of my favorite musical instruments is the acoustic guitar, and Debra is BRINGING IT. I love every song on this cd (Message In the Music, Change, Oh My God, Love, etc). You can add Debra to this new crop of urban artists who is multi-talented (she sings, writes, produces, and plays her own instruments) ala Tonex and Deitrick Haddon.Know doubt, you will not be disappointed with this project. Who do I compare her music to? (you know how we all like to compare). Debra's music is a fusion of Lauryn Hill, India Airie, Erykah Badu, and Alicia Keys."

"This album was okay. It had that neo/R&B vibe. I really haven't heard of Debra but when I heard her sing "Message in the Music" I decided to give her a try. My favorite songs were "Surrender", "Jesus", and "Because of Your Love". I definately thought she could do without those interludes. I don't know if those were her kids but it was very annoying. But overall this was a decent album."
A big bowl of hot buttery grits

"I would say neo, but this music rings of truly authentic soul gospel music. It has all of the main ingredients, the grit, the love, the pain and the joy. The rythyms are on the one two, nicely chopped drums laced with acoustic guitar melodies. Debra's voice is a breath of fresh air on every track. Do yourself a favor and buy it."
