CD Reviews

A great singer in more than one style

"I have owned this CD for more than three years, and it's still one of my favorites. I also enjoy Deanna's jazz singing, but don't concur with 'A music fan' in dismissing this work. Quite the contrary, this album contains for me the reference version of Leonard Cohen's beautiful 'Song of Bernadette' - a remarkable, thrilling performance. All but two of the other songs (one exception, 'Maybe' is also for me a standout) are written or co-written by Deanna Kirk herself. The result is a highly personal album -- both lyrically and musically -- that is not afraid to experiment and take risks. For example in the splendid 'Waitress Song' Kirk affects an intoxicated slur in singing the laments of an aspiring actress who's waiting for a part other than "hooker, bimbo, girlfriend, or psycho." Likewise in the final track, Kirk attempts to recreate the environment in which her Nana sung lullabies. In summary, if your interest is for great singing and something off beat and original, then this deserves your consideration."
Excellent storytellling and insight...

"This was my 2nd c.d. of Ms. Kirk's to buy and I have always enjoyed it. While I feel that her work is not for everyone, she is still extremely approachable and not at all 'GARBAGE' as one reviewer commented. She's definitely an artist to keep an eye on and with any luck will gain an even larger following.

I'm also pleased to see that Deanna enjoys mixing musical genres and styles together in a way that complements each other. I was so inspired by her cover of "Song of Bernadette" that I bought the sheet music (found in a Bette Midler song book) for use in my wedding. Too call her music 'trash' or 'garbage' is a crime."
What a treat!!!

"I stumbled upon Deanna Kirk's album several years ago and fell in love with it. It's one of those CD's that you just put on repeat and listen to over and over again. Just discovered that she has done another album and have ordered it."
