CD Reviews

A one hit wonder -- but what a hit!

(3 out of 5 stars)

"Dawn Penn has a reputation as a one hit wonder -- her performance of "No, No, No" is mesmerizing, and it went to the top of the charts twice -- in the 1960s when first recorded, and then again in this 1994 remake (which appears in two different mixes on this disk). But after "No, No, No" the rest of the material is pretty undistinguished, even working with several production teams. She has a good voice, and apparently could get steady work as a backing singer, but she seems to lack the personality or charisma to really shine as a solo artist -- except on that one song. One might want to skip this disk and obtain a recording of "No, No, No" off a collection."
A treasure for anyone who enjoys reggae.

"Between her haunting and mesmorizing voice and the wonderful melodies and lyrics, this is a fantastic collection of songs. What a shame she hasn't encountered more acclaim. This woman deserves to be as well known as Bob Marley and maybe someday she'll get her due. Until then, count yourselves lucky to partake of her incredible talents."
Soft, Mellow Reggae that has you longing for island love

"This cd has it all. Love songs with a reggae feel and soft sensuous Dawn on top of sexy bass lines. Enough said, this CD is a Reggae classic from the first cut to the last."
