CD Reviews

A good time in Hard Time County
Jerome Clark | Canby, Minnesota | 05/21/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"There are more singer-songwriters in the world than you can shake a stick at, however much you might want to. I would never have heard of David Childers if the internet radio network TwangCast had not put his "Ghosts of Cleveland" on rotation several months ago. This song of parting and love of place is so sad and affecting that whenever it came on, it stopped me in my tracks. Then James Talley, no slouch as a vocalist and writer himself, highly recommended Childers's Hard Time County to me. He was right. This is real stuff: tough, passionate songs, every one of which sounds like a true story. The production, alternating between acoustic and folk-rock sounds, wonderfully underpins Childers's gruff, plain-spoken vocals. "Ghosts" is still my favorite song here, but the more I hear this record, the more I like everything on it. This deeply rooted music is so much better than the usual singer/songwriter dross that you'll be happy you didn't miss spending time in Hard Time County."
Truly Excellent Music
Andrea M. Brokaw | Washington State | 06/02/2000
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Simply put, I love this album. The passion, intelligence, and sincerity that radiates through the lyrics and music of Childers' works is absolutely amazing. The album demonstrates an uncommonly eclectic influence that serves to accentuate Childers' talent and to draw out the spirit of Appalachia. Like the previous reviewer, my favorite song is the one that I heard first and the one that prompted me to purchase the album. However, in my case that was the rough and powerful "Cold Steel Arms." My runner up for favorite song is the title track, but there is not a song on this album that I dislike even slightly and _that_ is a stunning feat!"

"This is an excellent folk/country/rock cd. I especially like the songs Heart in My Soul and Should Have Left Her Alone. David Childers also puts on a great live performance."
