CD Reviews

Have been looking for these recordings for many years
W. L. Birney | Victoria, BC | 12/19/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"i had the Newport 56 LP in monophonic and a cassette i recorded from it; the record died and the cassette was crumby; the LP was never reissued as a CD because of licensing problems with the J&K tracks. Now i have the DBQ tracks in stereo; this is some of the best jazz that there is.

the cuts from 56 are

1. In Your Own Sweet Way

2. Two Part Contention (a masterpiece)

3. Take the "A" Train

4. I'm in a Dancing Mood"

"If you like Jazz that it inventive, lively and spontaneous, this recording is for you. This is Brubeck and his fellow musicians at the top of their form. I've always felt that Dave Brubeck is one of those musicians who genuinely has fun when he's performing and that sense of fun comes through in this recording. And it makes it fun to listen to it. It conveys the sheer sweetness of life. Enjoy."
