Dave's lost masterpiece
11/16/2003
(5 out of 5 stars)

"It took more than 30 years but finally we can listen to the tracks Dave recorded for his legendary unreleased album. Recorded between Kinks' sessions in 1967-1969 the album manages to represent the various stages The Kinks went through but also manages to prove that Dave was an underrated artist, operating in his brothers' shadow.
Do you want psychedelic rock? It's there (Creeping Jean & Mindless Child Of Motherhood). Do you like west coast pop á la The Byrds? It's there (This Man He Weeps Tonight). There are also tracks that reveal how much Dave was influenced by Bob Dylan (Are You Ready Girl?, Lincoln County & Do You Wish To Be A Man?). And there is so much more to enjoy.
The bonus tracks are also great. All four solo singles Dave released in the late 60s are included and to top it off Dave produced a 1968 demo version of his 1969 A-side "Hold My Hand".
Is this an album? Not really. Dave later admitted he recorded a number of tracks but had no definite line up ready for a proper solo album. But still, this is a wonderful collection of tracks and close enough to me.
Worth checking out even if you're not a Kinks fan!"
