CD Reviews

A Dead Partridge

"Because something is remade from old stuff does not mean its better

Before i review the CD, I must say I always enjoyed The Partridge Family - The Complete First Season television show. I have to admit up to ownership a few of their CDs and that of their lead singer David Cassidy, Their music seemed like comfort food to my ears. I always enjoyed the simple middle of the road music. To me the Partridge's was a certain that 1970's sound that always made me smile.

Now I don't know how I got a copy of this CD, i assume a publishing friend gave it to me because i said to someone that i liked the Partridge Family's music

In listening to these dance grooves remixes, I crave for the old. The original sound was crisp and fresh, but these hip-hop dance mixes with muffled vocals and sped up rhythm tracks seems a jumble of good fun music. The back of the CD states "Cassidy's timeless talent", BUT most of the time his vocals are hidden in the vibe and the drum machine tracks of each song. When the word vanish for a electronic riff, it is not music...its painful shame.

This CD seems seem set for the club set, but ask yourself this question "Who in the club scene today even remembers the Partridge Family and their music?"

I rather listen to the Partridge Family's Greatest Hit for the real music than this electronic pinball machine with bells and whistles instead of heart and soul of good music

This cd is one dead Partridge. Someone bury this roadkill of a CD

If you didn't know it was David Cassidy ...

"There are two groups of people who will diss this work: 1) the people who will remember the Partridge Family and think "OMG, David Cassidy is soooo 70's" and the Partridge Family fans still living in the past who expect to hear the songs as they were song 30 years ago (so why not just buy one of their older albums?). But honestly, if you didn't know this was David Cassidy and you just popped it in and started playing it, you would be playing it over and over (as I've done for my niece and nephew who were born after the Partridge Family was long gone from TV). The I Think I Love You remix is definitely club-worthy. It's a shame he still has the curse of being a 70's teenage idol on him because this is a collection mainstream music would otherwise embrace as I have."
David Cassidy Brought Up To Date

"On first listen it would be easy to dismiss this CD. Some Cassidy purists may possibly do so - but you HAVE to listen in entirety to really get it.

This is Cassidy/Partridge material brought right up to date with remixes by Craig J - who has done some awesome remixes for the likes of Madonna, Beyonce, Gwen Stefani and Mariah Carey. And he has done a highly credible job with Mr Cassidy.

This is a feel good, "get on your feet and dance" retake of David Cassidy's material. The first thing that is evident is that David's voice, always magnificent, shines through. The man can really sing!! The production quality of the remixes is also fabulous. One can almost imagine that if The Partridge Family were starting out today - this is the sound they would have been given.

The songs - highly melodic - sound very contemporary. What Craig J has done is take the material and do unfamiliar arrangements to songs that are very familiar. The Partridge songs stand up very well and I especially enjoyed "I Think I Love You", "I Can Feel Your Heartbeat"", "I Woke Up In Love This Morning" and "Echo Valley 2-6809".

But it's David Cassidy's solo retakes that really do it for me. "Rock Me Baby", "Could It Be Forever" and "Ricky's Tune" are terrific. But the absolute stand out track is "Cherish". In my humble opinion, this track has Top 40 HIT written all over it!!

I know that some of David's fans would prefer some new material and completion of the Cassidy/Partridge back catalogue. I understand that and wouldn't mind that myself at all. For some too, the criticism may be about what the songs lose in passion by upping the tempos. My response to that, however, is that (a) the songs still communicate extremely well and (b) they are readily available in their original form.

As a long standing Cassidy devotee - I am REALLY happy to have this CD in my collection. It's fresh, new, uplifting, fun, slick and contemporary. And you just can't go past David Cassidy's voice!

If you're interested in hearing the original recordings, buy Could It Be Forever... The Greatest Hits. It's a wonderful retrospective of David's 70s career. But buy this CD too and enjoy it for the experience I'm sure David and Craig J intend it to be. You won't regret it."
