CD Reviews

Terrific cd's at a bargain price!

"When I Dream is the first album (actually 8-track) that I ever heard by Crystal Gayle. Of course, I'd heard Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue on the radio but didn't have the album. My grandfather had a bunch of 8-tracks that he was giving away and I snatched up this gem from Crystal Gayle. When I Dream is the album that started a lifelong musical love affair with this beatiful and talented lady and her recordings of jazz classics, such as Cry Me A River on this cd, started my musical love affair with that type of music. I wore out that 8-track and later purchased the cassette but it was a reissue of the original lp and they cut out a few songs on the cassette. I'm just elated to have this original lp on cd. Other 2-for-1's are recorded on one cd and you have to listen to both lp's but this one comes with 2 cd's in one case, I prefer this method. I'd seen this offered on ebay for triple the price and sometimes the bid goes over a hundred dollars. I love the cd but that's an awful lot of money for a cd. I'm so happy to have found this great bargain on Amazon.

Crystal Gayle is one of the most underrated singers of country music, probably because her sound is not so country. She actually has more number one hits than her more famous sister, Loretta Lynn. Both women are talented but I prefer the slick jazzy feeling of Crystal,s music over Loretta's traditional style. This cd showcases her range of style from the Johnny Cash original, I Still Miss Someone to the remake of Cry Me A River, a wonderful Julie London classic. The firs cd is We Must Believe In Magic which includes the signature song, Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue. Alot of the songs have been reissued on other collections but not all of them have been released on cd so that makes this set a must have for any Crystal Gayle fan. Be cautious of the ebay scammers that are selling this for triple the price that Amazon offers it!"

"I bought this one because in my younger days she always sang such good songs, nice beat to her music and her voice is wonderful"
One of the great female vocalists

"Crystal Gale's first half dozen albums are a real treasure. For many years they've been out of print, and it thrilled me to learn that they are all now available. She doesn't have a great range, but her voice has a kind of jazzy pop sound that's cheery and delightful. There's really nothing country sounding about her voice, nor are there any twangy guitars in the arrangements. I suspect she got tagged as country because she's Loretta Lynn's younger sister. On the other hand, there's no reason why country music lovers wouldn't like her music; it's pretty universal. "Don't it Make my Brown Eye Blue," which is on the first CD (it's a two-CD set), is a real classic and in my opinion her best song ever. I never get tired of it. Her warm voice contains just enough emotion to convey the pain but not enough to make you feel the pain. She does such a wonderful job on it that I don't think anyone else has dared cover it. Most of the other songs on these two albums sound great, and a couple of them are memorable, especially the title song "When I Dream." Also, the production of these CDs is impeccable. They sound like they've been perfectly remastered. If you like Crystal Gale or superb female vocalists, you will probably love these CDs. Highly recommended."
