The Leonard Bernstein segment of the budget-priced Composers on Broadway series is a 47-minute miscellany of Bernstein's great shows as represented by the Decca-Universal catalog. That means Candide (Overture, "Glitter and Be Gay") and West Side Story ("Tonight," "America," Ballet Sequence) are represented by Bernstein's 1990s recordings for Deutsche Grammophon (the ones with June Anderson and Kiri Te Kanawa). Mary Martin and Nancy Walker perform "Lucky to Be Me" and "I Can Cook" from On the Town, and Thomas Hampson sings 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue's "To Make Us Proud" (taken from DG's White House Cantata). Because Bernstein's early work was recorded for Columbia, this compilation has to rely on re-recordings, but an interesting inclusion is Trouble in Tahiti's jazzy Prelude recorded by David Atkinson and Beverly Wolff, who headlined the 1952 TV production. --David Horiuchi
