CD Reviews

CHARMING TCHAIKOVSKY
Melvyn M. Sobel | Freeport (Long Island), New York | 07/20/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"At over seventy-four minutes per CD, and collecting, essentially, the composer's five most important solo piano opus #s together intact, this set is an incredible bargain CD re-issue, still, even after its initial release by Vox Productions almost thirty years ago.

When I bought the original vinyls, not much Tchaikovsky piano music was available (outside Russia); in fact, it was downright scarce. Consequently, the majority of these works were entirely new to me; but I grew immediately attached to them all and have remained so ever since. This is in no doubt due to Mr. Ponti, whose renditions of this wonderful music are rather etched into my heart permanently. He has proved a faithful guide through this repertoire and, as far as I'm concerned, I would cavil very little over any minor disagreements of interpretation. His are good, sound performances often touched by distinction, tenderness and genuine love. There can be no argument as to whether or not the pianist enjoys playing this music. He does. And it's quite obvious. And it is absolutely because of Mr. Ponti's playing that this set can still proudly stand with the best today's market offers.

The inclusion of Opp. 39 ("The Children's Album"), 51 and 72--- beautiful, delightful and piquant pieces rendered similarly--- would be worth buying the set for, alone. But, throw in "The Seasons" and the Piano Sonata and, well, it's a win/win situation all around. No losers here at all. At the ridiculously reasonable price, there's no need to hesitate; it's a steal!

The sound, remarkably, is fresh and immediate.

Highly recommended, especially for those unfamiliar with Tchaikovsky's piano music.

My, my, my. How I envy your first hearing!
