CD Reviews

Live document of latter-day edition of the band
hyperbolium | Earth, USA | 06/12/2000
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Given how many live albums the seminal line-up of the Airmen recorded, this 1982 recording of a depleted latter-day line-up is fairly superfluous. Who's on it? Hard to say, since the liner notes don't include a personnel listing. Commander Cody and guitarist Bill Kirchen seem to be the only original members. The replacements are all competent enough, but the stoney wonder of the original line-up was either gone, or just didn't make it to disc. It's a reasonably fun set, but more for the completist than for someone trying to get their first taste of the Airmen's live show. Try "Live From Deep in the Heart of Texas" or "We've Got a Live One Here" first."
GREAT album from cody's Moonlighter days
Earl Jones | DEEP IN THE HEART OF TEXAS | 12/08/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"In the early 80s, Commander Cody was still rockin & boogie'n with the best of 'em, and his back up band was Bill Kirchen's band, the Moonlighters...not like the original line up, but kirchen is in it! This album was Recorded in the Lone Star State, Live At Gilley's is a pretty good album...I wouldn't go as far to say "not as good as the old stuff" because it is, just in a different way...it's a bit of a different sound, but things change, and that's ultimately a good thing. And I mean, c'mon, if this album is good for nothing else, it's good for that GREAT live version of "TWO TRIPPLE CHEESE, SIDE ORDER FRIES!" To address the othe reviewer who said "Who knows who the line up is" Well, it was George Frayne (Commander) on piano/vocals, Pete Siegel on Steel Guitar, Steve Mckay on Sax, and Bill Kirchen on lead guitar...Great album, Great Music by AWESOME musicians, and it's presented very nicely, nice cover art, decent liner notes, and a few old pictures taken out of the archives. This album is definantly worth buying."
