Good Recording To Have, But Not The Best Les Nuits d'été

"To my knowledge, this is Dame Janet's final recording before her retirement from recital, concert, and recording work. She had previously retired from opera in 1982. That said, I am very happy to own this recording, having purchased it at a discount price in England.

Baker's voice still possesses that trademark sound that gained her legions of fans. However, her Les Nuits d'été is nowhere near the quality it was when she recorded it with Barbirolli in 1969. That is one of the only disappointing factor on this disc. Also, her voice is miked at a distance rather than taking center stage as her EMI and Hyperion recordings do. The rest of the works are wonderful on here, including the ones featuring the women of the London Symphony Chorus.

In summation, this recording is great to have for the bookend of Baker's career, and overall provides great listening enjoyment."
