CD Reviews

A Clifoord Jordan Gem.Just Great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
C. Katz | Peoples Republic Of Massachussettes | 05/29/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Along with slightly better known "Glass Bead Games" this was Clifford Jordan's other Strata East LP.The tenor saxophonist leads two separate groups. the sextet selections include trombonist Julian Priester, pianist Wynton Kelly, bassists Wilbur Ware and Richard Davis, drummer Albert Heath and trumpeter Don Cherry.More indide than outside it is fine session and should be snapped up before the notoriously small run P-Vine re-issue is gone.

One of my all time favorite recordings

"I have probably (to my shame) owned over 10,000 LPs and CDs over the years. Jazz, blues, classical, folk, Indian, koto, shakuhachi, oud, whatever else you want. But I could never imagine living my life without this recording from the moment I first picked it up when it was released back in 1969 or 1970. Like many others, I was a Strata East freak. That small musician owned label released some of the greatest recordings of that time. Masterworks by Charles Brackeen, Stanley Cowell, Charles Tolliver were all released on the label. This recording was the first of their Dolphy Series. The personnel is unbelievable:

Clifford Jordan- tenor sax and all compositions

Julian Preister- trombone

Don Cherry- trumpet

Wynton Kelly- piano

Wilbur Ware- bass

Richard Davis- bass

Al Heath- drums all played on Vienna and Doug's Prelude. On side 2 Cherry and Heath were replaced by

Kenny Dorham- trumpet

Roy Haynes- drums

Ed Blackwell- drums.

Think about that for a second. On the compositions on side 2, Ouagoudougou and 872 the rythym section was Wynton Kelly backed by Richard Davis and Wilbur Ware on bass and Roy Haynes and Ed Blackwell on the drums. Or savor the idea of Wynton Kelly playing with Don Cherry. My ears get all happy just writing those sentences.

Jordan is incredible. This LP and Glass Bead Games are the reasons I claim him to be the most underrated tenor sax player of all time. He is romantic, soulful and plays with such a rich tone. Priester, Kelly, Cherry all contribute wonderful iconic solos.

I don't know what else to tell you. I do not often recommend spending $20 plus dollars on a single CD. This bad boy is the exception. This is a very difficult recording to find. And this time, the music is definitely worth the price.

p.s. Another of the great Strata East recordings available on Amazon is Charles Tolliver's Live in Japan. The best bargain on that one is the Mosaic Tolliver box.

Anybody who loves soulful intelligent hard bop who buys either of those recordings on my recommendation will name children or pets after me. They are that good. Enjoy.

p.s.s. This CD version also includes a booklet which had several pages of very nice photos of the recording session. There is also several pages of interesting looking notes of unknown value since they are in Japanese and I remain blithely ignorant of other languages."
