CD Reviews

ONLY ITALIAN?

"I wish disc 3 is sold by itself alone. I believed they are all Italian songs, which really sound so romantic, that I can only listen when it is Sir Cliff Richard singing. I have been looking for the longest time for most of the songs featured - really remind me of my happy younger years."

"I've been looking for this song for more than 10 years. I do hope that I can buy disc 3 only. Please inform me. These songs remind me when we were young since my father was a song lover, we used to have these songs (long play album) way back more than twenty years ago when I was still in the Philippines. I'm glad that I can find it here. Thanks Amazon's webssite."

"An interesting phenomenon of 1960s pop music was the desire of many artists to break into a certain country's market by singing some of their hits in the language of that country. Many know that the Beatles, for, example, sang several of their hits in German. Well, Cliff Richard was no exception to this practice. Only he sang many more of his songs in the target languages--enough to put onto four CDs! This outstanding set includes all the non-English songs he recorded--in German, French, Spanish, and Italian. A few might be ones that he did not record in English, but for the most part, they will be familiar. It's fun to listen to foreign language versions and in some cases, they're better than the originals. `Nur mit dir (On the Beach)', for example, is much better in German. The music track must have been rerecorded for the German version. Same goes for `Die Stimme der Liebe (Voice in the Wilderness)'--much better in German. You can also compare versions; `Power to all our Friends' is in German, French, and Spanish. However, not every song is sung in each language. The Italian section focuses a lot on love songs. So, if you're in the mood, this is great listening.

Well, is there any value to this set besides the charm of hearing Cliff sing in foreign languages or hearing Italian love songs? Absolutely! I am a German teacher and use these songs in my classroom. The songs are fun and easy. I use them to illustrate various grammar and vocabulary items. `Nur mit dir' is great for pronouns; `Es war keine so wunderbar wie du' (I Could Easily Fall) is perfect for comparatives. Besides, the kids love clapping along to the song--some never get it down! The list goes on and on. The possibilities are as open as your creativity and imagination. So, if you are a foreign language teacher, have your department buy this set. Most high schools will teach French, German, and Spanish, so, even though you'll fork out a hefty price for the set, three teachers will benefit from it (and four if you're lucky enough to have Italian.) and it won't be that expensive considering its potential use.

So, this is great music with great value. I highly recommend it.
