CD Reviews

Timeless

"Chris' many non-U.S. albums are well worth pursuing (try to find "Blue Moon," which is really a film music collection which should have been titled "Songs from the Silver Screen"). This is one of them, and one of the best, faultlessly sung and orchestrated from start to finish. The lady's taste in songs is always impeccable and here the collection is typically tasty. What's remarkable about Chris is she still sounds young and new, though in the Claude Thornhill live cuts I have of her she already is an unbelievably accomplished singer (she takes the pop confection "Wish You Were Here" and makes 20 times of the song what it is). If you can find the unreleased FIRST version of "All About Ronnie" with Stan Kenton (it's on some Japanese collections) as it's instructive to see how they changed the record a few weeks later with dramatic results but on BOTH versions Connor is simply brilliant. Stan Kenton raved about her both as a singer and a person. If you ever get to meet her you will instantly adore her as the singer IS the person--thoughtful, charming and an original."
The readings by Chris on this cd, really engernized me

"It's still the same old story , you know, what one person likes another will dislike. This is what is called being subjective. There are probably no two people who have the same likes and dislikes. This is fine, for it shows that we are breathing and not taking things for granted. For me this cd was ideal. It is what I was looking for in jazz. It featured a beautiful crooner backed by a fine trio. This is the perfect setting for me and my fantasies. I wouldn't change this cd for anything. For this cd, Chris sang most of my favorite tunes. Her voice was a delight to listen to. She played it cautious which is what I like. There were no surprises with this cd.For the band, Chris used the best musicians and they played to perfection. One thing that impressed me the most about the sound of this band, was that Richard Rodney Bennett wrote the arrangments. He really did a good job of highlighting the piano in these arrangements.
What a treat these charts were to hear and hear and hear.If you love the sound of soft relaxing jazz, this cd is for you."
As cool as ever, Chris Connor still going strong...

"She sounds exactly like she did 40 years ago, it's amazing, her voice is still cool, smooth, and haunting as ever, as she sings such standards as Gone With The Wind, As Time Goes By and September in The Rain. Connor is backed by a spectacular jazz trio with Hank Jones as the leader. This is essential music for any classic jazz fan... Recommended!"
