CD Reviews

A great album with questionable remastering . . .

(4 out of 5 stars)

"Performance-wise this is an outstanding, essential Chris Connor album. I do, however, have a few quibbles with this reissue. Most notably, there is a kind of buzzy electronic sound present throughout some of the songs, such as Where Flamingos Fly and All Too Soon. (I wonder if the import Atlanic version has the same sonic problem as this Collector's Choice issue?) Also, I've always been a bit bothered by some of the notes that Ms. Connor sings on All Too Soon. She doesn't come in quite high enough on the notes that fall on the words "part" and "affair"). Whether it is intentional improvisation or because she is unfamiliar with the melody, it has always bothered me a bit.

Those little quibbles aside, what you have here is not only a excellent Chris Connor album, but an essential purchase for anyone who enjoys jazz/pop vocals. This album stands as one of many examples of what an artist who loves her art sounds like. It's the real deal."
