CD Reviews

A very special one
Jon T. Kilpinen | 11/29/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Despite their solid reputation and overall stellar career, Cheap Trick have had some poor, uneven albums over the years. This is definitely not one of them. Sure the last couple of tracks wander a bit, but this is a great disc. Several tracks jump out as instant Trick classics, rivaling even their best songs from years past. My Obsession is simply an infectious, very well-crafted song with a rich, catchy melody. I think it's one of Cheap Trick's ten best songs. Scent of a Woman is a great opening rocker (and not a cover as one reviewer suggests). Too Much, Words, and Sorry Boy are also very good tracks. And I really like Pop Drone, though other reviewers apparently don't. Overall, this is just an enjoyable disc . . . much better than a lot of stuff that is on the radio and even better than much of Cheap Trick's catalog since the late 70s or early 80s. If you like rock music with a healthy dose of pop sensibility, I think you'll enjoy this CD."
Cheap Trick - A Rather Avereage Release From The Band
Steven Sly | Kalamazoo, MI United States | 09/16/2008
(3 out of 5 stars)

"Although they remained a relatively successful touring act, Cheap Trick had not put out an album of new material since their record company Red Ant folded in 1997. Continuing down the independent road the band finally released "Special One" in 2003. After the creative comeback of their last disc, "Special One" would have a lot to live up to, and unfortunately it is not quite as good in my opinion. The opening track "Scent Of A Woman" sounds like The Who and although I did not take to it right away it grew on me to be one of my favorite tracks on the album. "My Obsession", "Pop Drone" and "Low Life In High Heels" are all decent tunes too, but overall I find this a step down from their previous and next efforts. I can't really put my finger on exactly what it is that I don't like about this one, but I just find it to be a rather average Cheap Trick release."
