CD Reviews

Some of Schubert's best loved works, brilliantly played!
Mike Powers | Woolwich, ME USA | 11/03/1999
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Awarded a three-star rating by the Penguin Guide to Bargain Compact Discs, this two-CD set contains two of Schubert's best loved chamber works - the "Trout" Quintet and the Octet - as well as lesser known violin sonatas. All are played brilliantly by the Academy of Ancient Music Chamber Ensemble on authentic period instruments. The discs' sound is of highest quality. Overall, I found this a tremendously enjoyable listening experience, and I would highly recommend this CD set to any lover of classical music."
Musical 'Octet', however an anonymous 'Trout'

(3 out of 5 stars)

"I bought the Immerseel/L'Archibudelli version of the 'Trout' before I became aware of this recording. However I partially disagree with the previous review. I found the 'Octet' well done with a definite impetus to the music making. But I found my mind wavering in the 'Trout' and began to look forward to hearing the version with L'Archibudelli which has a wonderful briskness to it that is a delight to listen to. Immerseel contributes some sparkling playing in the recording with L'Archibudelli. I feel a much greater sense of spontaneity than with Stephen Lubin and The Academy of Ancient Music Chamber Ensemble on this recording. Lubin is a marvelous musician, however I like Jos van Immerseel's approach better. Even though this 2 CD set is a bargain, I would invest in both the L'Archibudelli versions of the 'Trout' and the 'Octet'. The inclusion of the violin sonatas did not make any sort of lasting impression and may be considered a detraction in that a better 'filler' could have been inserted. 5 stars for the Octet, 3 for the Trout, and 1 for the sonatas."
A Trout with gumption!

"Schubert's Octet is one of the most fabulous pieces of chamber music I have ever experienced, and this recording has a wonderful, sparkling take on it. The Trout quintet is also beautifully played -- just gorgeous. I would highly recommend this CD!"
