Before Cat Stevens changed his name to Yusef Islam, he had a slew of hits built around his soft, yet sometimes coarse, vocals. Stevens utilized a variety of instrumentation and rhythms in his predominantly acoustic arrangements, and songs like "Peace Train" and "Another Saturday Night" had a multicultural feel to them. Greatest Hits provides a decent overview of his more popular work, including the poignant "Oh Very Young" and "Father & Son." Unfortunately, the delightful yet brief "Tea for the Tillerman" is not present. The lovely "Morning Has Broken" has elements of Stevens's growing concern with religion, philosophy, and the relationship between the cerebral and the spiritual. In the early 1980s, Stevens, now Yusef, "retired" from the music profession because of his new beliefs. --Steve Gdula

"Cat Stevens started out in the late 60's as a teen pop star who was very popular in England but went largely unnoticed in America. With the release of Mona Bone Jakon, he changed his style to the acoustic-based singer-songwriter. That album made a minor dent in the US charts, but it set the stage for his breakthrough release, Tea For The Tillerman. Following that release in 1971, he had a string of hit singles and was a major presence on the album charts with such odd-titled releases as Buddah & The Chocolate Box, Teaser & The Firecat & Catch Bull At Four from 71-75. This release culls the hits from the period. The album opens with the marvelous "Wild World" and moves into the tender "Oh Very Young". "Moonshadow" & "Hard Headed Woman" are strong while "Two Fine People" is the only new recording for the release. Although they are two of his most popular songs, "Peace Train" & "Morning Has Broken" are both drippy and schmaltzy and have grow increasingly tedious over the years. "Father & Son" may be his best song with its poignant lyrics detailing the advice that a father is giving to his young son. Cat Stevens is experience something of a comeback after years of seclusion in the Muslim community and this greatest hits album is fine introduction to his music."

"I really like this album and Cat Stevens in general. I am assuming that a lot of people who will read this review know a whole lot more about good ol' Yusef Islam than do I; at twenty-two, I'm not quite old enough to remember him the first time around.... More so than some of his contemporaries, Stevens has been forgotten: growing up, I knew tons of kids with James Taylor and even John Denver albums (not to equate any of these artists!!!) but none who listened to tons of Cat....And that's not really fair. He was an artist (albeit a bit of a flake), a heck of a songwriter and musician, and one of only a few artists who can just generally connect with about any listener. That's an accomplishment..... AND... a really good reason to buy this album to get acquainted with what this guy can do....."
