Synopsis

Disney's latter-day attempts at building on its sterling character franchises have sometimes fallen short of the original's magic. But this Winnie the Pooh-inspired spin-off is a joyous musical surprise from first track to last. Veteran singer/songwriter Carly Simon seems to have soaked up a half-century of Disney animated song tradition and joyously made it her own on the seven new songs here, as well as a smart, modern folk-jazzy reinterpretation of the traditional "Winnie the Pooh" title tune. "If I Wasn't So Small (The Piglet Song)," "Mother's Intuition," and "With a Few Good Friends" are all charmers, while the march-along "Sing Ho For the Life of a Bear" taps into the vaunted Sherman Brothers tradition with playful joy. This is children's music without an ounce of condescension; indeed Simon's own children--Ben and Sally Taylor--are present on several of the tracks. Simon's sparkling slate of songs is augmented by five sprightly selections from Carl Johnson's orchestral score, and the collection concludes with a handful of bonus track demos by a solo Simon. --Jerry McCulley

CD Reviews

We both love it

"I saw this movie with my 3 year old daughter & the music caught my attention right away. I bought the CD and absolutely love it. And my daughter loves it too! Carly Simon's songs are wonderful- as another review noted-these songs could stand alone on the radio (with different lyrics). The instrumental songs are a pleasure to listen to as well. Can't recommend it enough (and I have always felt kind of neutral about Carly Simon in the past)."
Carly in top form and having fun!

"Carly Simon is an artist able to explore the depths of adult emotions in her music, and for that we love her. But Carly also knows that childhood and its innocence are worth celebrating, and does so with grace and a delicious sense of fun in this cd. Kids will love the beat, they will be singing along to "With a Few Good Friends" before their first listen is over, and adults won't cringe when the kids want to hear it over and over, since the music has adult appeal as well. If it's been a while since you've contemplated Carly's music, check out Piglet. And then check out her other work, such as the recent Anthology, which gives the listener a spectacular overview of her career thus far. I don't have kids - but Piglet's been in my cd player constantly since I bought it a week ago."
Wonderful children's music for grown-ups!

"I was a die-hard Carly Simon fan in the late 70's and early 80's. Being in high school at the time, however, I soon succumbed to peer pressure to listen to more "hip" music. I also caved in to my desire to keep up with my family members who were into progressive jazz (a good thing). So Carly got shelved. It wasn't until I saw "Piglet's Big Movie" with my 3 year-old son this weekend that I remembered (and actually realized, since I was so young back then) how talented Carly Simon really is and how original her music is. Her arrangement of "Winnie The Pooh" (aka: "Deep In The Hundred Acre Wood") is inspired. She's changed the key and used jazz chords and picking. I'm dying to get a copy of the sheet music. "Mother's Intuition" is original, moving, and musically exciting. "Sing Ho" will forever live in my house, as my son and I march around singining, much as we do with "Heigh Ho" from Snow White. "With a Few Good Friends" is universally relevant and very sweet. All in all, this CD is fun for children but, more importantly (how many times have I listened to "Sleepy Time on Sesame Street"?), musically interesting and enjoyable for us grown-ups!"
