Among the greatest music ever composed--well played

"This is an old recording; Vanguard recorded these way back in the 60s. Yet it has been beautifully mastered and lovingly presented. The organ continuo and cello accompaniment on the famous Zion Hears the Watchmen Calling is better than perfect--it supports and enhances the superlative singing while contributing a delicately supple flavor itself. Put the headphones on and be transported!Cantata 140 is probably Bach's most famous cantata, and fame can bring a certain dullness to an oft-heard piece. But I love this recording as much on CD as I did on LP (I bought it way way back then), and now can listen to both without having to flip it over. Just a polished performance sung and played by a dream group."
