CD Reviews

You Got The Love
Daniel Jason | New York, NY | 03/14/2004
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Divinely-inspired modern dance music secular enough for the club crowd but spiritual enough for Staton's Christian fans. Impeccably produced by K-Klass, with the fabulous added bonus of the Now Voyager remix of "You Got The Love" recently featured on the closing credits of the final "Sex and the City" episode. The new version of "Young Hearts Run Free," while inferior to the original, is infinitely more danceable. It's nowhere near as terrific as "Love On Love," "What Do You Want and "Love Has Come To Stay" -- all of which are dancefloor stormers -- and "Outside In", a terrific midtempo ballad with crystalline production. "You're Still the Lightning," written by vastly underrated dance diva Billie Ray Martin, is also a highlight. Don't miss this record, which has inexcusably remained unreleased in the U.S. Do make sure to get the UK import; the Japanese version doesn't include "You Got The Love.""
THE FIRST LADY OF SOUTHERN SOUL is back...and sounds GREAT!!

"I have been a Candi Staton fan for years and was pleased to find out that Candi released a new non-gospel album. I love all of her albums (both soul and gospel). The "Outside In" album showcases Candi at her best with wonderful songs that send a positive message. There are some catchy songs on here with a strong beat, including LOVE ON LOVE(written by Boy George), BOUNCING BACK, and the remake of the classic, YOUNG HEARTS RUN FREE. The one thing I like about this album is it has hidden messages that can be linked to her relationship that she has with Jesus. In the songs, OUTSIDE IN, YOU'RE THE LIGHTNING and YOU GOT THE LOVE, you can translate the lyrics to a deeper realiztion of how she is talking about the relationship between Jesus and his people. For example, "I'm on the outside, you're on the inside.....I'd rather be inside...give me a chance" is talking about how Jesus can benefit one's life.Besides the religious aspect that this album has, it has upbeat songs that make you wanna dance. I enjoy listening to all of Candi Staton's songs, from the FAME records to the her new gospel album, "Here's A Blessing." My favorite Candi Staton album would have to be either "Young Hearts Run Free" 1976 or "Candi Staton" 1980. I just hope that Warner Brothers Records will reissue the six albums that she did when she was on that label. Because all of the albums (which I have on vinyl) are worth reissuing. Candi Staton will always remain one of the pioneers of the Muscle Shoals Sound that made her famous. This album is worth purchasing at the import price. She is an excellent singer and needs more recognition, and with an album like "Outside In", maybe others will realize this. Thanks."
Sex and The City and more!

"I got this CD for the Sex and the City song and was surprised by how great it is. I like the first song-Love Yourself MORE than You Got the Love. This is my first exposure to her-and it is a great introduction to her music."
