Synopsis

Cameo's loopy, angular yet supple funk provided some supreme remix moments, as this stellar disc makes plain. Nurtured in the late-'70s funk scene, the group eventually expanded its sound to include new-wave and other rock influences while making a left turn in attitudinal terms: "Word Up"'s rejection of "psychological romance" became nearly as famous as its Good, the Bad and the Ugly keyboard whistle or frontman Larry Blackmon's red codpiece. Despite the absence of the anti-Reagan "Talkin' Out the Side of Your Neck," The 12" Collection all but renders The Best of Cameo moot. --Rickey Wright

CD Reviews

Cameo rules alright.
herr_chagall | split, croatia | 08/13/1999

"This is a "best buy" for people who are not too familiar with the group's output (shame on whoever you are!). Any dedicated collector & die-hard fan should already have the original singles at home. Too bad that the 70s singles like "Rigor mortis" and "Funk Funk" are not included--however, with "Word Up!" being included, one cannot go wrong. Buy it!"

"This is the type of CD you need after 5pm on a Friday afternoon as you suffer through yet another traffic jam... Yet the FUNK is so TIGHT.. You aren't even await of the fact you've been jammin a straight 60 min....
