The Tincture
Thomas Laverty | michigan | 11/09/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"I say, the "tincture" because in many ways, Van Dyck embodies Caccini's movements like a tincture embodies the herb, the medicine, the essence.

Giulio Caccini was reputedly a father of Baroque music, but I would go further and call him a father of great music. He was early to understand the richness of tonal melody. His lute pieces are reminiscent of Johannes Kapsberger, and his vocal arrangements on par or above Ludwig Senfl and the other Italians of his time. Amor Che Fai? works its way around the music being made in the late Renaissance; it is the Kid A of its time.

Stephan Van Dyck's tenor is heartbreaking. Caccini could not have imagined his works sung so richly. Where there is notation, Van Dyck creates new worlds through articulation. The gem of one century meets the gem of another century.

Any lover of early Baroque needs this record."
