Ultra-Smooth, But Please Kill Me
Rob Lightner | 08/10/2000
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Good lord, Buddy G's got the voice. Why he never made it to Sinatra's status is beyone me. His take on classics like "The Lady Is a Tramp" are rich and creamy as his momma's alfredo--he takes great pains to proclaim his heritage--and mixes a little 60's pop into the standard lounge act.The track that turned me into a lifetime Grecophile is the last: "It Had Better Be Tonight (Meglio sta sera)." This short romp is snappy, powerful, and--of course--as Italian as they come, and the combination of the pounding drums and his aching croon makes for a showstopping finale. How can I like this drivel? How? How? I'm a postmodern guy with postmodern likes...but...somehow...it works. Better not to ask to many questions."
Buddy Greco younger in 1999 than in 1963 !!

"One not "the best"recorded songs of Buddy Greco. But still a very good start when you never heard of this entertainer. Specially 'She loves me'from his ON STAGE album and "Teach me tonight" from one of his AL COHN albums are juwels. On his latest records he seems to have the same energy as in the sixties."
Tremendous, brilliant, lovely

"This disc is fantastic. Greco epitomizes the kind of lounge "cool" that those lame rip-off bands like the Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy try to. Unlike those bands, however, Greco is more concerned about the music than how he looks in an oversized suit while holding a martini. Believe me, it shows! Forget that "Zoot Suit Riot" garbage and go for the real thing. Among the many high points are tremendous versions of "The Most Beautiful Girl in The World," "Around and Around" and "Mr. Lonely." Then,of course, there's Greco's take on "The Lady is a Tramp." If you've ever heard his version, I need say no more. Buy it now!"
