Frank Bridge was Benjamin Britten's major composition teacher, and their works are frequently recorded together. Bridge was an adventurous composer of sometimes rather tough-sounding music, but his pieces have real substance and getting to know them is rewarding. These two Eastman School of Music musicians collaborate very well, and give us completely satisfying performances of all the music involved. Both Sonatas are given even more compelling performances by Mstislav Rostropovich and Benjamin Britten on separate London CDs, but if this coupling appeals, the disc will certainly satisfy. --Leslie Gerber
