I rarely seem to hear anything from the piano quartet repertoire in live concert performances. This is a pity because for me, the balance of piano and strings is more pleasing in the piano quartet than the more numerous works for piano trio. The two works on this CD, the Mendelssohn quartet No. 2 and the Brahms No. 1, are both delightful. All of the instrumentalists contribute to polished and assured interpretations of these tuneful works. The piano sound is very well captured, and blends with the strings to form an integrated ensemble sound. The recording is first-rate. Recommended without reservation to anyone who enjoys chamber music, and especially to lovers of Mendelssohn and Brahms."
