"Boy, what a discrepancy in ratings for this Naxos disc! I've been revisiting my collection of Brahms 'clarinet works' and am listening to the sonatas at the moment w/ Berkes & Jando; I cannot really agree w/ the clarinet being 'out of tune' (the instrument does hit some high registries, though) nor the sound assessment - hearing this recording on my den speakers w/ a decent stereo system. I'd likely rate this disc 4*, but I felt that the overall rating should be higher than the current rank.

Jando is a yeoman 'house' pianist for Naxos, and doubt that he would tolerate a clarinet that was out of tune? BTW, this CD was given a 3* rating in the Penguin Guide w/ excellent comments regarding performance and sound; I also read a number of Fanfare reviews of other recordings of the clarinet sonatas, and the Naxos offering came up several times as an outstanding recommendation. So, for the price the recording remains a good bargain & performance."
