CD Reviews

Bob Marley lives
Enrique Torres | San Diegotitlan, Califas | 03/29/2001
(3 out of 5 stars)

"The good news, Bob Marley lives....now the bad news, he's been resurrected without a soul. I should have known better as this CD is NOT under the auspices of the Bob Marley Foundation. Not nearly as good as 1999's "Chant Down Babylon, " the remix of classic Marley with modern techniques and interpretations, this CD is good but falls short of the greatness deserving of the Honorable Robert Nesta Marley. The use of studio tecniques should enhance the originals, extend the life of the song further not a rehashing of the mystic qualities of Bob Marley drowning in reverb echo and other electronic techniques. Imagine Bob Marley doing his skank to the beat laid down for these tracks, hard to imagine but his spirit is doing just that as you read this wherever you are. He's been resurrected for the dance floor, the universal qualites of Marleys music transcend dance floors and borders, greatness always shines through, even if it is muddled through modern musings. "Sun is Shining" is interesting but do we really need three different mixes on one CD? The first Fire House Club mix is enough. "African Herbsman" is close to the real deal as Sen Dog of Cypress Hill no doubt has much respect for Marley, it's Marley without overly done gimickry. "Natural Mystic" is a fine remix by Ital, sounding much like the original, slightly modified in a tasteful manner. "Mr. Brown," mixed by Electric Sky Church is excellent shake your booty stuff that is so far removed from the down tempo original that they quite possibly could have refrained from using the title. Then again it probably wouldn't sell with Marleys tag. The DJ's and producers have done a good job but not a great job. Bob Marley lives, he's dancing somewhere in a club, his skanking has infiltrated the dance floors, his message lives on for a new generation. The greatness of Bob Marley shines through, no matter the layers of sound mixed."
A very good CD with only one flaw

"I really enjoyed this-- CD EXCELLENT REMIXES OF SOUL REBEL AND KAYA
not to mention- FUSSING AND FIGHTING, WILL JUST BLOW YOU AWAY.
Only Natural Mystic was a major dissapointment could have done a much better job with that selection it seemed as if they rushed that one other than that, I highly recommend this album all of Bob's Key Music selection's like[ Don't Rock my Boat ]were very well Mixed.Any one new to Reggae Music will definitely like this one --Trust Me ---"
