CD Reviews

Complex and sweet

"I've been a Blue Cartoon listener since their self-titled debut, but it seems like this treasure of a band just keeps getting better. The overall sound/feel of the band on 'The Wonder of it All' is even more smooth than previous releases, possibly because of the richness of the new singer's voice. At the same time, it is edgier in terms of experimentation with effects and instrumentation. There is some really complex layered instrumental stuff, and the harmonies are so sweet. The lyrics, as we've come to expect from Blue Cartoon, are clever and stand up to multiple listens with each time something new."
Pure pop

"I thought I read somewhere that Blue Cartoon acquired a new lead singer for this latest CD. If so, it makes little difference. This band is at the forefront of Beatle-influenced power pop, yet they seem to receive little press. That's a shame because almost every song on this new disc is slickly produced and radio-friendly. Plus, they have now released three straight phenomenal CDs, with nary a hiccup or clunker among their recordings. For any fan of the Beatles, XTC, Phantom Planet, Candy Butchers, Tories, Churchills, Wondermints, Sugarbomb, Holland, Squeeze, Cotton Mather, and Bigger Lovers."
Power pop at its finest!!!

"The first two CDs by this band only hinted at what was to come. This recording is power pop at its finest. All of the influences can be heard but the band's music stands on its own. Many of the songs recall solo George Harrison with the use of his slide guitar style but hints of The Beatles, Badfinger, and XTC are everywhere on the recording. All of the songs are great but "The Wonder of It All", "Flying Cars (1959)", "Before It's Over", "Empty Pages" (a tribute to John Lennon), and especially "The Center of the Universe" grabbed my attention. "The Center of the Universe" sounds like an outtake from The Beatles "Revolver" or "Abbey Road" recordings. Get it and do your ears a favor."
