CD Reviews

Duke Ellington at his very best.
11/26/1998
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Black, Brown, and Beige is a necessary addition to the library of any Duke Ellington fan. It represents Duke's move to expand jazz from the nightclub to the concert hall. In this work he echoes the spirit of George Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue." Tragically, the entire work was never recorded by the Master himself, but this release includes its most important themes, the "Work Song" and "Come Sunday." According to Duke Ellington, "Black, Brown, and Beige" was composed with the intention of being a tone poem that attempted to musically document the history of the African experience in America. To accomplish this goal Duke's orchestra is superbly combined with the rich gospel voice of Mahalia Jackson to bring this great work to its full fruition."
