Synopsis

Album Description
These eleven new releases in the Classics for Pleasure series feature some of the finest orchestral and vocal music ever composed. Works for orchestra include Brahms's towering Piano Concertos, Bach's intimate Cello Suites, Haydn's elegant London Symphonies, and Tchaikovsky's wrenching Pathetique Symphony, while vocal music is represented by Strauss's autumnal Four Last Songs, and highlights from Wagner's Ring Cycle, Villa-Lobos's Bachianas Brasileiras, and Gilbert and Sullivan's The Gondoliers. These definitive performances feature artists such as Paul Tortelier, Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Adrian Boult, Victoria de los Angeles, Bernard Haitink, and more!

CD Reviews

Delightful excerpts lead me to want the whole Haitink cycle!
Daniel W. Fowler | Austin TX | 02/04/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Listening to these excerpts makes me want to obtain the whole Haitink Ring cycle (of which there are some excellent reviews here on amazon). I was immediately struck by the clear recorded sound and the wonderful playing of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Based on the excerpts, Haitink offers a brisk but controlled reading that captures the grandeur and angst of the drama without overdoing it. The singers are excellent.

I have many Ring cycles (Barenboim, Krauss, and Keilberth cycles are my current favorites) and was not looking to obtain another. However, the excellent playing on this disk may have reeled me in to another cycle purchase. Be warned!"
