Synopsis

Album Description
One of the best recordings ever of this modern masterpiece, and certainly the best in its price range. A gripping live performance with almost no audience noise except the applause at the end of each act. Karl Böhm was one of the classic conductors of this opera from the beginning, and this is one of his most dramatic readings. Welsh baritone Sir Geraint Evans (1922-1992) was one of the world?s great opera singers, particularly noted as the foremost British interpreter of Falstaff in Verdi?s opera. Evans joined the Royal Opera House company at the age of 25. In 1960, he became the first British singer to peform at La Scala (at the invitation of Herbert von Karajan) in 35 years. Four years later he made a sensational debut at the Met Opera under Leonard Bernstein. Truly a legend in her own time, soprano Anja Silja recently celebrated her 70th birthday just a few months after performing in Berg?s opera Lulu! For over 30 years, she has been considered a leading vocal interpreter of Berg, Schoenberg, Weill, Janácek and Wagner. Live performance, Salzburg, August 8, 1971.
