CD Reviews

No Lady Macbeth, this sleep walker.

"If you want an opera that has an intelligible plot, that is so melody based that you can whistle it later from beginning to end, and offers singing opportunites to delight both participants and listeners, then spend your money on Bellini's delightful 1831 opera "La Sonnambula".

Sutherland and Pavarotti were in the first production I saw, but on CD I much prefer this 1952 Cetra production from Turin. Franco Capuana directs. There are a few tiny cuts to the complete score. I don't know how opera directors ever contrived to have a soprano of elephantine proportions sleep walking across roof tops and unsafe bridges on stage, but in the recording studio context Lina Pagliughi makes an ideal Amina. The small, bright voice and the exquisite phrasing are such as are rarely heard today. An easy, bird-like trill is the only requirement she does not provide. Her Elvino is Ferruccio Tagliavini, a tenor she herself described as "flawless". He too provides some exquisite singing and also injects some drama into the gently-rocking quintet Bellini provides when Elvino discovers his fiancé Amina in the bed of the Count. One of the highlights of the score is the double aria provided for Conte Rudolfo in Act 1, sung here with aristocratic authority by Cesare Siepi.

There have been many reissues of this production. This 2004 reissue sounds as bright and comfortable to my ears as any I could want.

Very intimate sonnambula

"I bought this set on advice from previous reviewers. Thank you. It is outstanding performance. Very different from the modern performance practices were the orchestra is blazing and singers have to scream to be heard. None of these here. It is the singers opera. And they do a superb job. Tagliavini is outstanding all the way. His duets with Pagliughi is unsurpassed. The only minor complain is Lina Pagliughi's coloratura in the last Amina's caballeta. Not as clean as it could be. But that does not spoil overall quality of performance. The parformance has a very intimate, almost chamber feel to it.

Very highly recommended."
