Synopsis

Product Description
(CD + DVD-audio set) Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra derives its name from the approach taken in treating instrument groups within the orchestra in a 'concertante' or soloist manner throughout the piece. This virtuoso treatment, for example, is notable in the fugato section of the first movement where the brass are highlighted as well as in the second movement where pairs of instruments appear consecutively creating a brilliant passage. Stokowski's interpretation of this popular Bartok composition was recorded at the Houston Civic Center by Bert Whyte and team and originally released in March of 1961. One disc consists of an audiophile quality remastered CD; the other is an HDAD Plus 2-sided hybrid disc that will play in 24/96kHz on a standard DVD video player (no video footage included) and in even-higher-quality 24/192kHz on a DVD audio player.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"In 1960, Bert White of Everest recorded Leopold Stokoski conducting the Houston Symphony Orchestra in Bartok's CONCERTO FOR ORCHESTRA at Walthamstow Assembly Hall in London, on 35 MM three track magnetic film. Classic Records have release this two-disc set transferred directly from the original master. One disc is a two-channel Red Book CD. The other disc has DVD Video on one side and DVD Audio on the other; the DVD Video has a choice of three-channel Dolby AC-3 or two-channel 24 bit / 96 kHz; the DVD Audio has a choice of three-channel 24 bit / 96 kHz or two-channel 24 bit / 192 kHz. These high-resolution transfers reveal orchestral detail simply swallowed up in other recordings. A DVD Audio or universal player is required to hear the best transfer, but any DVD player can do the DVD Video side; and any CD player can do the Red Book disc. I have compared this recording with Reiner's Living Stereo SACD, which is two-channel only, and the Stokowski has so much more life and inner texture."
