Behemoth - The Apostasy.

(5 out of 5 stars)

"After beginning their career as a black metal band in the early '90s, Behemoth has evolved more and more toward death metal with each release. The Polish group's latest effort has a few black metal influences, but moves even further towards death metal. The Apostasy is a crushing album that also has fantastic musicianship. Behemoth also infuses some Middle Eastern influences into a few of the songs, which adds an interesting flavor. Inferno's drumming is really good, and whether he's playing blast beats at lightning speed or keeping a monster groove on the slower songs, his playing is flawless. After the stunning Demigod album, Behemoth somehow manage to sound even more aggressive and extreme and they don't lose their focus like most extreme metal bands who play noise!. The track Inner Sanctum has everything the modern death metal tune should contain. Blasting drums, light speed in places, coupled with memorable heavy riffs, Ear piercing and very tight solos and Nergal's insane vocals. Slaying The Prophets Ov Isa and At The Left Hand Ov God are both my favorite tracks and show Behemoth's talent and memorable songwriting with so many different clever riffs packed into each track, Nergal has some interesting solos, but the riffs are really amazing and what stands out. Speaking of Nergal, his distinctive vocals are a little more raw than on the past couple of albums. There's also a guest appearance from Nevermore's Warrel Dane on the song Inner Sanctum. If you like death metal that's similar to Nile then your going to love this."

"I'm a huge fan of Behemoth, so its disappointing to write this little blurb. Unfortunately, sandwiched between the masterpieces that are Demigod and Evangelion, is this sorry effort. The Apostasy is a study in randomly ordered blast beats, growling, and breakdown riffing. It seemed like the only idea Behemoth had for this album was to make it as loud and incoherent as possible. There is zero flow to the majority of the songs, or the album in general. "Rome CE 64" and "At the Left Hand Ov God" were the only tracks I found listenable. The others are best forgotten. And really, track 11 is called "Christgrinding Avenue"? That's a title you find on a piece of crap Cradle of Filth EP, not a Behemoth tune.

Bottom line, skip The Apostasy. Go straight from Demigod to the epic Evangelion (which I couldn't take out of my CD player for 3 weeks straight). \m/"
