CD ReviewsGreat Beethoven and Schumann Ralph J. Steinberg | New York, NY United States | 01/13/2003 (5 out of 5 stars) "Kempe's "Eroica" is probably the broadest on disc, and superbly sustained. The tension in this performance comes not from motoric energy but from subtle understatement and suspense. The same is true of his "Manfred" Overture, certainly the finest ever committed to disc. Kempe was a fervent admirer of Furtwaengler, and it shows so here, although Kempe is by no means a slavish imitator. To my way of thinking, Kempe was the last of the great German conductors, more so than Karajan and even Klemperer."
