CD Reviews

Lacks Voltage!!!
David Lee | Canada | 09/15/2004
(1 out of 5 stars)

"Just when you wonder about the Naxos logic of releasing the Mozart symphonies along with Schubert 9 we are given a lacklustre performance of Beethoven 3 and an entirely passionateless performance of one of Sibelius greatest works...added to this is the sonority of sound which comes from a cheap microphone set up in a an acoustic such as Rebecca Cohn and you really have the makings of a very poor recording.

Generally the Eroica lacks momentum...the sweep of the triadic melody of movement 1 one sounds disjointed and underplayed...the colour of the winds and strings does not blend so well. Intonation is rather suspect at times towards the finale and scherzo...articulation is not uniform in the fast 16ths in the finale.

Generally speaking one of the very worst in this set and sadly not entirely representative of a fine conductor.

This chamber like sound is unsuited to this epic music!!
